Department of Tourism

Department of Tourism is a unique department established to provide the best Travel & Tourism Management education to its students. The Institute conducts Diploma, Bachelor and Master’s Degree programme in Travel and Tourism Management under the Umbrella of UOU

As per the Planning Commission an investment of Rs.10 lakh creates 78 jobs in the Tourism sector while the same generates just 18 jobs in the Manufacturing and 45 in the Agriculture sector. Currently Travel & Tourism, being employment intensive, provides employment to approximately 31 million (both direct & indirect) people throughout the country and is one of the largest employers in the country, this number is expected to rise to over 40 million by 2019 and over 43 million by 2022.The skill requirements and skill gaps are presented for the following major segments driving employment in the Tourism Industry:

- Travel and Tour Operators
- Online travel agencies
- Car Rental companies
- Hotels and Restaurants.
- Airlines Ground staff/Cabin Crew

- IRCTC ( Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Limited)
- State tourism development boards etc.

Employment opportunities exist in both the public and the private sector in this industry. In the public sector, you can work in the Directorates and Departments of tourism of the center and the state, guides etc. In the private sector, on the other hand you can secure a job in a travel agency, hotel, airline, transport agency or a cargo company. Since this industry is a relatively new one, there are not a huge number of experienced individuals. Hence, you can move up the ladder fast and establish your own agency after a few years. The key functions among travel agencies and tour operators are those of group tours, ticketing, itinerary preparation, product development and accounts. These account for 55% of all the employees in this sector. This number is estimated to grow to 0.16 million by 2012 and 0.22 million by 2018.Travel trade is estimated to employ 0.3 million by 2022, leading to an incremental human resource requirement of 0.14 million. After completion of any of the above mentioned programmes the professional’s gets may easily get the salary between 10,000 /- per month to 15,000/- per month easily on an average depending on the caliber of the individual.
